Ingredients
  

Dough
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 egg egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon red food coloring

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cream butter and powdered sugar until fluffy. Mix in egg, vanilla, and peppermint extracts.
  3. Combine flour and salt; gradually add to wet mixture to form dough. Divide in half.
  4. Add red food coloring to one half. Roll both dough halves into 6-inch ropes, twist together to form candy canes.
  5. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet, bake 10-12 minutes. Cool and sprinkle with crushed candy canes.

Notes

Chill the dough if it becomes too soft for easier handling.
